The licking does the calming. Anywhere, anytime.

The licking does the calming. Anywhere, anytime.

Step 1: Prepare: Spread a thin layer of a safe, spreadable treat across the textured surface. Peanut butter (xylitol-free, within your dog's 10% daily treat allowance), plain yoghurt, mashed apple (core removed), or wet food all work well. For longer-lasting engagement, freeze the mat for 30-60 minutes before use.

Step 2: Attach: Press the suction cups firmly against any smooth, clean surface - car window, crate floor, grooming table, vet surface, shower wall or floor. The mat holds securely while your dog licks.

Step 3: Let the licking work: The repetitive licking motion engages your dog's natural calming response, releasing endorphins and redirecting focus away from whatever is causing anxiety. Most dogs will lick for 10 to 20 minutes with a standard spread, longer with a frozen treat.

Step 4: Clean: Rinse under warm water immediately after use. The Travel Buddy is dishwasher safe for a thorough clean.

The Problem

For anxious dogs, leaving home is often where anxiety peaks, not where it starts.

Car anxiety, vet visit stress, grooming, a new environment, these are some of the most common situations where dog owners feel helpless. Their dog is overwhelmed, there's no way to remove the trigger and most calming tools are either too large to bring along or too slow to help in the moment.

Dog owners need something that works fast, travels easily and genuinely engages their dog's natural calming mechanism.

Solution

Licking releases endorphins. The Travel Buddy makes it happen anywhere.

Repetitive licking is one of the most effective natural calming behaviours available to dogs. It triggers the release of endorphins and gives the nervous system something safe and satisfying to focus on. The Travel Buddy's textured surface holds spreadable treats firmly in place, keeping your dog engaged and licking for longer. Its compact design means it goes wherever you go - in a bag, in the car, to the vet, at your holiday home. Strong suction cups anchor it to any smooth surface: car windows, crate floors, grooming tables, vet examination surfaces. Spread a small amount of a safe treat - nut butter used within your dog's daily 10% treat allowance works well - and let the mat do its job.

Why Blue? The Colour Science Explained

Every colour in the Paw by Four range is chosen based on research into canine colour vision, not simply because we liked the colour.

Dogs have dichromatic vision, meaning they perceive colour primarily through two types of photoreceptor, compared to our three. Research shows that dogs perceive colour most clearly in the blue-yellow spectrum. Blue is one of the most vivid, high-contrast, and easily distinguished colours in a dog's visual world.

This matters particularly for a mat designed for use in stressful, unfamiliar environments. When a dog is anxious, like in a vet waiting room, or in the back of a car, or in an unfamiliar building, their ability to quickly locate a familiar, comforting object can make the difference between a stress response that escalates and one that finds an early outlet.

The Travel Buddy's blue colour is chosen to be as visible and distinctive as possible in your dog's world, whether that's against car upholstery, a clinic floor, or a hotel carpet.

Compare this to The Steady Eddie which is a gentler blue tone for calm daily home use, and The Brave Maker which dogs will see as a neutral blue-grey for focused training work. Each colour is matched to its context and purpose.

You can, but if your dog has ongoing daily anxiety rather than primarily situational stress, The Steady Eddie may be better suited as your main mat. It's designed for frequent, gentle daily use. The Travel Buddy's deep groove pattern makes it ideal for high-intensity stressful moments. Many owners find both mats useful for different purposes.

For best results, aim to offer the mat 10–20 minutes before the stressful event begins and before anxiety has peaked. Once a dog is in a full stress response, they are less likely to engage with food. Giving the mat early allows the endorphin response to build before the most intense part of the experience.

Start at home in a calm, relaxed moment with a high-value treat your dog loves. Let them discover it at their own pace, don't hold it or push it towards them. Once they're enthusiastically engaging with it in calm circumstances, you can begin using it in mildly stressful situations, building up gradually to the more challenging moments you've been preparing for. The stronger the positive association built at home, the more effective it will be away from home.

The Travel Buddy is a management tool, it helps reduce the experience of situational stress, but it won't eliminate severe anxiety on its own. For dogs with significant travel or situational anxiety, we recommend speaking with your vet, who may suggest medication to use alongside management tools for particularly stressful events, or working with a qualified behaviourist on a longer-term programme. The Brave Maker can support that desensitisation work alongside The Travel Buddy for immediate management.

Research into canine colour vision has established clearly that dogs have dichromatic vision, they perceive colour most vividly in the blue-yellow spectrum. Blue is one of the most distinct, high-contrast colours in a dog's world. While any lick mat can provide calming through the licking activity itself, choosing a colour your dog can see easily and clearly is a meaningful design decision, particularly for a mat used in stressful, unfamiliar environments where fast recognition matters.

This depends on what you spread on the mat and whether it's been frozen. Room-temperature spreads typically provide 15–25 minutes of engagement. Frozen treats can extend this to 30–45 minutes, depending on the size of the portion and the temperature. The deep groove pattern is designed to make the treat last as long as possible.

Yes, many owners place the mat in their dog’s crate or on the car seat or in the footwell. The base is flat and has suction pads that allow it to stay in place. Always ensure your dog is appropriately secured for travel in line with UK Highway Code guidance, and supervise use, particularly on the first few occasions.

Yes, lick mats are safe for puppies and can be a valuable tool for introducing positive associations with car travel, vet visits, and handling from an early age. Always supervise young puppies to ensure they are licking the mat, not chewing it.

Yes, spread your chosen treat and freeze for 2–4 hours. This is particularly recommended for longer events. Prepare ahead and transport in a cool bag to keep frozen until needed.

The lick mat is safe to use in the dishwasher. For hand washing, use warm soapy water and a soft brush to clean the grooves thoroughly. Clean as soon as possible after use, before food dries in the grooves.

Both Kongs and lick mats provide enrichment and anxiety relief through food engagement, but they work in different ways. Kongs are better suited to chewing-based engagement and work well for dogs who need a sustained challenge. Lick mats encourage repetitive licking specifically, which research links more directly to parasympathetic nervous system activation. Lick mats are also flatter and more portable, easier to use on a car seat, a clinic floor, or any flat surface. Some dogs respond better to one than the other but many benefit from both.

Because it's designed primarily for use away from home, the situations where anxious dogs typically struggle the most. Car journeys, vet visits, grooming appointments, holiday homes, and other out of routine moments where your dog needs calm support and you need something you can actually bring with you.
