Consistency is the calming tool, the Steady Eddie is how you build it.

Consistency is the calming tool, the Steady Eddie is how you build it.

Step 1: Use it when you're home first. Introduce The Steady Eddie when you are home and relaxed. This is really important, your dog must learn that the mat is a good thing in itself, not only a signal that you are about to leave. Offer it during calm morning or evening time regularly before using it as part of your departure.

Step 2: Build it into your departure routine. Once your dog associates the mat with calm and reward, introduce it as part of your pre-departure sequence. Spread a safe treat, such as xylitol free peanut butter, plain yoghurt, or wet food, attach the mat to a floor or wall surface, and allow your dog to settle into licking before you leave.

Step 3: Leave calmly while they lick. The goal is for your dog to be fully engaged when you leave. A frozen mat extends licking time to 20 - 30 minutes, which covers the most critical period immediately after you leave when anxiety normally peaks.

Step 4: Repeat daily. Consistency is everything with separation anxiety management. The Steady Eddie works best if used every day, both while you're home and as part of your departure, as it builds a calm association that strengthens over time.

Step 5: Clean and maintain. Rinse after use. Dishwasher safe for thorough cleaning.

The Problem

Does Your Dog Live with Constant Worry?

Dogs with separation anxiety are living in a state of chronic low-level stress that spikes every time their owner leaves. Without a daily tool that brings that baseline stress down, even the best departure routine will struggle to help. Most calming interventions are used reactively - in the moment of a trigger, not as part of a consistent daily practice. What's needed is something that becomes part of the fabric of everyday life at home, building positive associations and lowering arousal steadily over time, not just in an emergency.

Solution

The Science of Daily Calming

The Steady Eddie's textured surface is designed for daily home use, a regular licking session that triggers endorphin release, reduces arousal and reinforces calm as a habitual state. Used as part of a departure routine, it helps your dog build a positive association with you leaving, gradually transforming something stressful into something anticipated.

When used during owner-present time, it prevents the mat from becoming solely a departure cue, which is essential for effective counter-conditioning. Strong suction cups keep it securely in place on floors, walls and tiles, wherever your dog settles at home. Spread with a safe treat within their 10% daily treat allowance, freeze for longer engagement and let consistency do what one-interventions never can.

Why Lilac? The Colour Science Explained

Every colour in the Paw by Four range is chosen based on research into canine colour vision, not simply because we like the colours.

Dogs have dichromatic vision, they perceive the world primarily through two types of photoreceptors, compared to our three. Research shows that dogs perceive colours most clearly in the blue-yellow spectrum. Reds and greens appear as muted, indistinguishable tones and blue, by contrast, is one of the most vivid colours in a dog's world.

Lilac contains blue wavelengths but it is a softer, less saturated version of blue. To a dog, The Steady Eddie appears as a gentle, calm blue tone rather than the high-visibility intensity of pure blue.

We did this intentionally. The Steady Eddie is designed to be used multiple times daily, in the familiar surroundings of your dog’s home and as part of a routine. For this purpose, a gentle, calming visual presence is more appropriate than high-intensity visual stimulation. The colour reflects the product's purpose which is steady, reliable, gentle support.

Compare this to The Travel Buddy which is pure blue, chosen for maximum visibility in unfamiliar environments where an anxious dog needs to quickly locate their familiar calming tool. Different situations call for different visual signals.

Yes, it's designed for this. Many owners use it 2–3 times daily as part of their routine (departure, mealtime, bedtime). The moderate groove pattern is calibrated for frequent, gentle use without over-stimulating your dog.

Both work well. For routine daily use, spreading your dog's regular wet food or softened kibble across the mat is practical and keeps calories in check. For higher-value moments like departures, grooming, or particularly anxious periods, a more appealing spread like dog-safe peanut butter can be more effective. Many owners use regular food for some sessions and higher-value treats for specific moments.

All three share the same food-grade silicone construction. The Steady Eddie (lilac) is the home routine mat, used daily for separation anxiety management and counter conditioning. The Travel Buddy (blue) is designed for on-the-go use during car journeys, vet visits and stays away from home. The Brave Maker (teal) is designed for high-anxiety trigger moments such as fireworks and thunderstorms. Each has a distinct texture pattern suits to its primary purpose.

The Steady Eddie can be a valuable part of a separation anxiety management plan. Used consistently before departures, it provides a positive focus during a high-anxiety moment and, over time, begins to change the emotional association with pre-departure cues. However, for severe separation anxiety, we strongly recommend working alongside a qualified trainer or behaviourist alongside any management tools.

Yes, The Steady Eddie is excellent for building calm daily routines in puppies from an early age. It's particularly helpful for crate training, settling exercises, and teaching puppies healthy self-soothing behaviour. Always supervise young puppies to ensure they are licking the mat, not chewing it.

Anxious dogs typically thrive on routine and familiarity and the predictability of the mat is part of what makes it calming. You can vary what you spread on it to maintain interest, and the frozen version offers a different experience. In our experience, dogs don't get bored of reliable sources of comfort.

This varies depending on what you use and how much you spread. With regular food spread thinly, expect 10–20 minutes. Frozen, higher-value treats can extend sessions to 30 minutes or more. Some dogs are particularly thorough and can lick for up to an hour! The moderate groove pattern is designed to extend time without the mat being so complex that it becomes frustrating.

The mat is lilac in colour only, it is made from unscented food-grade silicone. There is no added fragrance or scent of any kind. The colour is chosen based on canine colour vision research.

Please note lavender essential oil is toxic to dogs and should never be used with or near any lick mat.

Yes, spread your chosen food on the mat and freeze for 2–4 hours for an extended, cooling licking session. Particularly useful for bedtime routines and longer periods alone.

Yes, The Steady Eddie is particularly well suited to older dogs. It provides gentle mental stimulation that doesn't require physical exertion, and the routine element is especially beneficial for senior dogs who may be experiencing age-related anxiety or cognitive changes. The flat design is also accessible for dogs with mobility limitations.
