Show your dog that scary things can predict good things.
Step 1: Introduce the mat positively first. Before using The Brave Maker near anything that scares your dog, let them first discover it as a purely positive experience. Spread a high-value treat in a calm setting and let them enjoy it freely. This establishes the mat as something good before it becomes part of any training work.
Step 2: Identify your dog's threshold. Your dog's threshold is the point at which a scary thing becomes too much. Counter-conditioning must always start below that threshold where the trigger is present but it is not overwhelming your dog. When your dog goes over threshold, they are simply too scared to learn. The best is to start well within your dog's comfort zone and only progress when they are consistently relaxed.
Step 3: Pair trigger with mat. When the trigger appears, present The Brave Maker with a high-value treat immediately to your dog, within one to two seconds. Your dog will happily engage with the mat, the trigger will pass, and the mat gets removed. It is important that the mat is only present when the trigger is present, this is what creates the new association.
Step 4: Progress gradually. Only increase the intensity or decrease the distance when your dog is showing that they are relaxed at the current level. The most common mistake is moving too fast. Progress takes weeks, not days, and in some cases can even take months.
Step 5: Freeze for longer sessions. Spread a high-value treat on the mat and freeze it for 2 to 4 hours to extend training exposures. A frozen mat significantly extends licking time, keeping your dog engaged throughout for longer and maximizing the calming endorphin effect.
