Show your dog that scary things can predict good things.

Show your dog that scary things can predict good things.

Step 1: Introduce the mat positively first. Before using The Brave Maker near anything that scares your dog, let them first discover it as a purely positive experience. Spread a high-value treat in a calm setting and let them enjoy it freely. This establishes the mat as something good before it becomes part of any training work.

Step 2: Identify your dog's threshold. Your dog's threshold is the point at which a scary thing becomes too much. Counter-conditioning must always start below that threshold where the trigger is present but it is not overwhelming your dog. When your dog goes over threshold, they are simply too scared to learn. The best is to start well within your dog's comfort zone and only progress when they are consistently relaxed.

Step 3: Pair trigger with mat. When the trigger appears, present The Brave Maker with a high-value treat immediately to your dog, within one to two seconds. Your dog will happily engage with the mat, the trigger will pass, and the mat gets removed. It is important that the mat is only present when the trigger is present, this is what creates the new association.

Step 4: Progress gradually. Only increase the intensity or decrease the distance when your dog is showing that they are relaxed at the current level. The most common mistake is moving too fast. Progress takes weeks, not days, and in some cases can even take months.

Step 5: Freeze for longer sessions. Spread a high-value treat on the mat and freeze it for 2 to 4 hours to extend training exposures. A frozen mat significantly extends licking time, keeping your dog engaged throughout for longer and maximizing the calming endorphin effect.

The Problem

A frightened dog can't be told to feel safe, they have to learn it.

Fear-based anxiety, whether triggered by sounds, strangers, new environments or the unpredictable chaos of daily life, doesn't respond to reassurance alone. A dog in the grip of genuine fear has no access to rational learning. What they need is a carefully managed process of new associations, of pairing the things that frighten them with something genuinely wonderful, repeatedly, patiently and at an intensity that they can tolerate.

Without the right tool for the process, dog owners either overwhelm their dog by pushing too hard, or make no progress at all. The gap between wanting to help and knowing how, and having what you need to do it, is where most fearful dogs stay stuck.

Solution

The Science Behind How It Works

Counter-conditioning is one of the most evidence-backed approaches in animal behaviour. It works by pairing a previously frightening stimulus with something the dog genuinely loves, until their brain forms a new association and the fear response starts to change. The Brave Maker is designed to be the high-value positive anchor in that process.

It's intensive groove pattern is specifically engineered to extend licking time, which maximises the release of endorphins, while keeping your dog deeply engaged throughout the whole experience.

The teal colour is chosen based on canine colour vision research. It's distinct and recognisable to your dog without adding any visual stimulation during an already stressful situation. Used correctly, consistently and at the right pace for your dog, it creates genuine, lasting change. It's not managed anxiety, but a real shift in how a frightened dog feels about their world.

Why Teal? The Colour Science Explained

Every colour in the Paw by Four lick mat range is chosen based on research into canine colour vision, not because we like the colour.

Our dogs have dichromatic vision, meaning they see the world primarily through two types of colour receptors, compared to our three. Research shows that dogs perceive colours most clearly in the blue-yellow spectrum, while reds and greens appear as muted, similar tones.

Teal sits in a wavelength range that canine vision research indicates our dogs perceive as a calm, neutral blue-grey tone; it’s distinct and recognisable, but without the high visual intensity of pure blue. This matters during confidence-building work for two reasons:

  • Visibility: Your dog can clearly identify and locate their mat, which helps the mat become a familiar, positive object they associate with good experiences.

  • Calm presence: The neutral tone doesn't add to sensory stimulation during what are already carefully managed, sometimes challenging situations.

The goal during counter-conditioning is for your dog's full attention to be on the positive reward experience, not competing with additional visual stimulation. The Brave Maker's teal colour is chosen to support, not interfere with, that focus.

No. Any dog owner can use The Brave Maker to help build their dog's confidence at home. The principles of pairing positive experiences with things that worry your dog are straightforward to apply. That said, if your dog has severe anxiety, fear-based reactivity, or complex behavioural challenges, working with a certified professional will produce better and safer results. We provide guidance on finding the right support at the bottom of this page.

The Brave Maker is specifically designed for active confidence-building and changing emotional responses to fear triggers. It has a more intensive groove pattern for deeper engagement during training moments, and its teal colour provides a calm, neutral visual anchor. The Steady Eddie is for gentle daily anxiety support as part of a routine. The Travel Buddy is for situational or travel-specific anxiety. Many dogs benefit from using The Brave Maker alongside one of the other mats.

It depends on where your dog is in their settling-in journey. If they're still very overwhelmed and adjusting to your home, starting with The Steady Eddie to build a calm daily routine may be more appropriate first. Once they're more settled and you're ready to begin working on specific fears, The Brave Maker becomes a valuable tool. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help you decide.

If you're working through a structured programme of gradually increasing alone time, The Brave Maker can be a useful tool during those training sessions. For daily routine departure support once a dog has been trained, The Steady Eddie may be more appropriate. For many dogs, both mats serve different roles.
